Brenda

“Brenda Appleton retired in 2009 after 35 years working in the corporate sector and is now heavily involved volunteering with a wide range of community groups.  She has been involved with the LGBTI communities in Melbourne over nearly 20 years and has been a member of TGV for more than 12 years and is currently Treasurer.

Brenda is a member of the last Victorian Government LGBTI Health Ministerial Advisory Committee.

Brenda is passionate about using her lived experience in an effort to improve the health and wellbeing of trans and gender diverse people across Victoria, by raising awareness of gender issues and addressing social isolation, discrimination and stigmatisation for the community.”

Nathan Despott

N Despott

Nathan is passionate about social transformation through embracing diversity, effective communication, and applied research. He was involved in bringing international human rights advocate Bishop Gene Robinson to Australia in 2013 and also developed the Inside Ex-gay project aimed at giving voice to people affected by the ex-gay movement.

Nathan works in the disability sector and sees many parallels between inclusion of people with disability and inclusion for LGBTIQ Australians. He feels very strongly about highlighting the disconnect between the modelled actions of Jesus in the gospels and some of the exclusive and harmful behaviour of the evangelical movement, much of which has been inadvertently retained by LGBTI Christians. He believes that an outward focus, an embracing of gracious collaboration, and a shared goal of social transformation are central to the church getting back to what it’s supposed to be doing.

He has studied communications, social science, theology, and linguistics – and is slightly obsessed with science fiction and Eurovision.

Lyn McDonald, TransFamily

Lyn M

TransFamily is a Peer Support Group for parents, siblings, extended family and /or friends of a trans person. The group offers a warm and supportive environment for the parents, siblings, friends and family of transgender people.

How the peer support group ‘TransFamily’ Started

‘I saw the need for parents, siblings, extended family and friends of transgender people, in all their various diversities, to be supported.   Many family members may face a particularly challenging process. The health and sometimes the very lives of their loved ones are at stake!

My experience is that of a mother whose adult child transitioned many years ago and is now my daughter. During this transition time I looked for a peer support group and the only one I discovered was in Sydney. As a Melbourne resident this was useless to me.   What I could and did do was write a book, He’s My Daughter – A mother’s journey to acceptance, using the pen-name, Lynda Langley.

While my daughter was transitioning she was supported by various groups and friends in the trans community. I did not have this type of support. With astonishing co-incidence, I met Sally Goldner. Sally, of Transgender Victoria, is also a social and human rights activist, media spokesperson and co-host of a radio program, Out of the Pan, on radio 3CR. She is a good friend, ally and advocate for trans people and an all round great gal.

Happy New Year Church-Thrive in 2 0 1 5

In 2014 the Lord spoke to me and said ROAR in 2 0 1 4 (two zero one four) and the Lord said be very intentional. I understood this to mean that each one of us was to come out of our shell and to proclaim our identity and Christianity boldly. I felt we were all being called to step out of the shadows and to express our faith to a world longing to hear good news.

More and more we see tragic events taking place around us; 2014 was not immune to such tragedies. Tragic events often produce fear and in those fearful times we look for comfort and shelter and we look for answers. Sadly our existence at times feels like nothing more than a game of survival.

I have noted over the years (as I’m sure most have) that the most popular items on the news and social media relate to tragic events or crisis. Persons injured or killed, wars and rumors of wars; animals abused, the environment being damaged; he said; she said….it all sells brilliantly.

The only time I see more focus from the news is when, during times of crisis, we see people come together. Amazingly we see people doing things beyond normal human ability as they act to save another. These brave moments flood into our homes through news and social media and they inspire us all….people helping people to win in this game of survival. Sadly, these occasions are tied back to crisis and sadly they are few and far between.

When I think about the Body of Christ as a whole I think we at times operate the same way the world operates in that we only come together during crisis. Don’t get me wrong there is plenty of good happening behind the scenes but what does the world around us see?

Jesus told the believers in Matthew 5:13-16

“13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Believers of Jesus Christ are meant to be light 24 hours a day 7 days a week, why then do we settle to just survive when we are meant to thrive?

The Lord said to ROAR in 2 0 1 4 this year however the Word of the Lord is THRIVE in 2 0 1 5!!

The church will thrive when we abandon ourselves to Jesus Christ and his teachings. I wonder how many causes, would cease to be causes if we as believers stood strong together for the cause of Christ. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, there is something about that name alright; it’s powerful, it’s life transforming, it’s the name of God who came as a man, saved us, and left us an example to follow.

 Here is what Jesus said:

 John 13:34-35

34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

In both passages (Matthew 5:16 and John 13:35) Jesus is saying show the world, let them see you in action. Jesus is saying stay connected to me and to one another and live out loud.

So how do we show the world the love of God?

  1. Pastors equip the Saints for service | Saints let’s go to work

Jesus explained the role of all believers in John 14:12

12 “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.”

The Disciples, after waiting for Holy Spirit to empower them began to do what they had seen Jesus doing and we today are called to do the same.

Paul explained the leader’s role in Ephesians 4:11-12

11 “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up”

Leaders our job is the help the Body discover and use their gifts for the Kingdom. Jesus could only cover so much ground. Now as the Body of Christ grows there is more opportunity for service; more opportunity to reach our communities. Our diversity lends itself to being relatable to those entrusted to our care and as such all hands are needed.

Saints- let’s give them something to talk about! Healed lives, Salvation, Miracles, Signs, and Wonders that can only come from convincing proofs of God’s love and touch.

  1. Operate in unity (there is strength and visibility in numbers)

When I say unity I am not saying we should all look the same, we are not all the same. Rather we embrace diversity and celebrate God’s wondrous creativity all the while speaking and demonstrating the language of love. The Church comes together in a spirit of love and support, working together to serve those entrusted to our care. The news that moves us the most; the news that brings tears to our eyes is seeing human beings coming together; working together and supporting one another.

Psalm 133:1

1 “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!”

Unity in the Body of Christ is how we reflect the light of Christ to the world around us. Unity is how the Body encourages one another. Unity draws others to participate in what they see as worthwhile and value added. Unity creates a voice and actions loud enough to shake news and social media with a message of faith, hope and love in the midst of conflict. Isolated instances of the power of God in a believer’s life are not enough. Miracles should never remain hidden. The freedom from addictions should be shouted from the rooftops. Lives touched by the love of Jesus ought to be celebrated in the streets.

To this end Acts 2 Faith Church will thrive in 2 0 1 5 as we equip the Saints and support other ministries who share the common language of love. We will love and support those entrusted to our care and we will see lives saved, healed and made whole. We will see miracles, signs and wonders as we allow God to use our hands for his glory.

May God richly bless you as you serve the King of Glory in this New Year!
